If the vehicle has been switched off for a lengthy period (longer than 68 minutes), the following Check Control message appears the next time the ignition or the engine is switched on: "Vehicle battery ! Increased battery discharge
when engine off". At the same time, the yellow lifting platform symbol in the instrument cluster lights up.
The "Energy diagnostics" test module shows entries regarding increased off-load current.
An increased off-load current may be measured during the workshop visit. This does not necessarily trigger a check control message - depending on the level of the off-load current.
Retrofitted electrical after-market equipment (e.g. hands-free systems, navigation system, "free TV module", GPS, tachograph, entertainment equipment, marten repelling units) may have been incorrectly connected to terminal 30, terminal 30gF or directly to the battery.
Among other variables, the intelligent battery sensor (IBS) regularly monitors the battery's discharge current while the engine is off.
The measured values are transmitted to the DME/DDE through the bit-serial data interface (BSD).
If the measured off-load current exceeds a value of 80 mA once terminal R has been switched off
for 68 minutes (E70/71 manufactured as of 9/08: 120 mA after 28 hours), the engine management system outputs the "Increased battery discharge when
engine off" check control message the next time terminal 15 is switched on.
This happens irrespective of the battery's state of charge.
Use of after-market equipment sold by the BMW Group, or after-market equipment the use of which has
been approved by BMW.
After-market equipment must strictly only be connected to terminal 15 or terminal 30g, unless otherwise specified in the terminal connection plan or in the installation instructions of the BMW retrofit kit.
In the event of the complaint described above, check the vehicle for non-BMW installations and explicitly ask the customer whether components have been retrofitted.
Cause analysis:
Run the "Energy diagnostics" test module. Read out the check control history regarding message no. 220
(Service functions ->Vehicle information ->Check control messages / not E65/66/67/68)
Locate the part of the circuit that is responsible for the increased off-load current.
a) Visual check for any hard-wired connections (e.g. cool boxes, marten repellents, etc.) to easily accessible points (battery, seat connector, rear-seat entertainment system, etc.)
b) Determine the distribution box that is responsible (front, rear, jump-start connection point, etc.)
Once the distribution box has been located, determine the cause by removing fuses while monitoring the off-load current.
Once the allegedly faulty control unit has been identified, also check whether non-BMW parts have been connected to the supply for this control unit (e.g. "Free-TV" module behind the CID, tuner).
If non-BMW parts have been retrofitted, explain the possible effects on the vehicle electrical system to the customer (increased battery discharge ->breakdown, failure of the bus systems, malfunctions in the navigation system, etc.)
The vehicle's operating permit may be invalidated through the use of after-market equipment that has not been approved by BMW or professionally fitted.
Warranty claims will be rejected in the case of any work that needs to be carried out on the
vehicle as a result of the customer's after-market equipment not having BMW approval
or because it was connected incorrectly.
