Handover of new vehicles to customers with insufficiently charged battery or damaged battery due to deep discharging. If a battery with incipient damage is not replaced, in the worst case this can result in a breakdown.
Batteries are flat or damaged due to deep discharging.
When carrying out a handover inspection of new vehicles, it is specified that an inspection of the battery condition be performed. During this operation, it may be determined that the battery is insufficiently charged or has been damaged through deep discharging.
If the result of the handover inspection of a new vehicle
(Service function “Delete handover inspection/Transport mode”) is that the battery is not sufficiently charged, it must be recharged before the vehicle is handed over to the customer.
If the inspection shows that the battery has been damaged through deep discharging, the cause must be reviewed in the “energy diagnostics” battery test module. Before delivery of the vehicle to the customer, the faulty battery must be replaced in all cases and the battery renewal is to be registered using the service function.
In addition, it is important that vehicles being stored have the battery recharged regularly according to the battery charging calendar, this also applies to externally stored vehicles.
Please note that vehicles in showrooms have a higher power requirement (for example due to frequently opened doors). In order to avoid deep discharging here, the recharging interval for these vehicles is significantly shorter. For this reason, a permanent auxiliary charge should be planned for showroom vehicles.
Note on charging the battery:
The battery must only be charged using a BMW approved battery charger at a constant charging voltage
of 14.8 V. If possible, the battery temperature during charging should lie between 15 °C and 25 °C. Under these conditions, the battery is sufficiently charged if the charge current has fallen below 2.5 A.
If charging is carried out at low temperatures, then charging should cease only after the charge current falls below 1.5 A.
Further information on charging the battery can be found in Service Information bulletin
SI 61 07 02 (875).
