The "6FL USB audio interface option" (for MINI, option
6ND or 6NE) has been available in various vehicles since March 2007.
This interface can be used to connect iPods/USB storage media to the Professional radio or the
Business and Professional navigation systems.
This document describes the functions of this option that are inherent in the design and do
not constitute an actual fault. This information should be shared with customers in the event of relevant queries. These
functions characterise the intended behaviour of the option. In the event of queries in this regard, no work
is permitted to be carried out on the vehicle. Reimbursement under warranty is not permitted.
The following points are involved:
- Connected USB devices are not detected and cannot be selected as an entertainment source.
This occurs with the USB device connected at vehicle start-up or when the USB device is connected
with the engine running. Not all USB devices are compatible with option 6FL. Please refer to the
latest list of compatible
ecommended USB devices. (see www.bmw.com/usb).
- A track cannot be played and is skipped. This could be that the file
is an invalid format (not mp3, wma, aac), is corrupt or protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM).
- Only Roman text characters are supported. Other character sets (Greek, Japanese, etc.)
cannot be displayed.
- The time before playlists, genres, artists, albums and tracks on USB devices
are displayed depends on the number of audio files on the final device. In the case of a
device with 80GB storage and 15,000 audio files, for example, this could take several hours.
- For using an Apple iPod, it is recommended to use the "Cable adapter for Apple iPod" with
part number 61 12 0 440 812. If the Apple iPod is connected using the cable supplied
with the iPod, the iPod is activated as an USB MSC device. This is only possible if the iPod
has been configured accordingly using iTunes and formatted using a FAT file system (Windows
systems only, not Mac). In addition, no access to the playlists is possible in this
operating mode and the DRM-protected audio files cannot be played.
Moreover, an iPod-similar display of genre, albums and tracks is not possible
- There may be malfunctions and audio interference if a device is connected to both the USB interface
and the 12V socket. Depending on the model, the USB devices may be
supplied with power by the USB interface itself. This means that no additional power
connection is required, nor is one recommended.
- Troublefree operation of USB hard drives cannot be guaranteed. The power supply
of the USB is not sufficient for most hard drives. Audio interference may also occur. The use of hard drives is not supported
ecommended.
- With the CCC headunit, browsing history is not stored. For example, if the list
of artists is browsed and an artist is selected, the cursor will appear at the beginning on return to
the artists list.
- Functionality may be restricted if a mobile phone is connected to the USB interface and paired with
the Bluetooth hands-free system. Some mobile phones
deactivate Bluetooth if connected to USB.

Inform the customer of this design. No operations are required. Reimbursement under warranty is not permitted.
If other faulty behaviour apart from these issues is found in option 6FL, a diagnostic procedure must be performed using the BMW diagnostic system and the instructions given there should be followed.
