Foreign material/fluid escaping from the steering box. See attachment 1.
Vehicles concerned:
all E70 and E71 with option 0271 (Active Front Steering).
The drops of fluid are yellow in colour. This is a lubricating grease which was used during the manufacture of the steering box and which liquidises at operating temperature. In very rare cases, small traces can be seen where grease has escaped (see attachment 1). The liquified grease stops escaping after a short period of operation.
Note:
This is not oil from the steering hydraulics. Hydraulic oil from the steering system is green in colour.
Vehicle equipment concerned: only E70/E71 with Active Front Steering (SA 0217) are affected.
In the event of a customer complaint, the area where the grease has escaped and the surrounding parts which have been covered in grease can be cleaned.
It is neither appropriate nor necessary to replace the steering box.
